Biohacking is the art and science of becoming healthier by intentionally changing the environment inside you and around you.
One example of this is wearing blue blocking glasses after dark.
Our bodies are not designed to receive blue light after dark. In fact, for all of human history, we have been exposed to only moonlight or firelight at night. These sources of light at night give off little to no blue light.
Only for the past decade have we been exposed to LED and CFL lights in the name of energy efficiency. In addition, the lights from our phones, TVs and laptops shine bright blue light into our eyes after dark.
Our modern lights and devices give off huge amounts of blue light and have been proven to impact our health. Blue light exposure at night is associated with obesity, heart disease and cancer.
Check out this chart and notice the high spikes of blue and very little red and no infrared from LED and CFL lights.
We can use Biohacking to stop the harm of blue light exposure at night.
- Cover up as much of our body as possible to stop the blue light at night from affecting receptors in our bodies.
- Change out the lighting we use at night to incandescent and halogen, which have little to no blue light.
- Use f.lux and Iris on our laptops that take out the blue light they emit at night.
- Wear blue blocking glasses at night to stop blue light from entering our eyes, no matter what light is shining.
This is biohacking at it's best.
Knowledge + Action = increased health.
Blue Light at Night is Bad + Blue Light Blocking Glasses = Increased Melatonin at night and higher health.
7 BIOHACKERS THAT MOST EFFECTED MY LIFESTYLE AND HEALTH
Mark Sisson - often called the father of the primal movement, Mark advocates for eating, moving and living closer to the way our ancestors did. Mark claims that humans have lived, eaten, and moved in specific ways and patterns for many thousands of years and we need to get ourselves back to these default patterns.
Only recently have we been able to sit all day, in front of machines, in ergonomic chairs, drinking sugary and caffeinated beverages and eating packaged food without needing to get up. We can now stay up all night with artificial lighting and trick our bodies into thinking it's always summer and always daytime.
Getting back to our primal roots has worked well for 62 year Mark. He looks like a Greek God and still move his body better than most 20 year olds.
Biggest Biohack I learned:
HIIT - Mark turned me on to sprinting or High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) once a week as a far better workout than steady state cardio.
By spending 4 minutes of hard work sprinting per week, we get more health benefit than 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a week. I now try to do a HIIT workout at least once every 2 weeks. Usually I take care of this training in JiuJitsu class.
Tim Ferriss - I first learned about Tim 10 years ago through his book 4 Hour Workweek. Tim is a huge biohacker, though he doesn't typically identify himself as such. He did write the 4 Hour Body, that's packed full of biohacks to get the body You want. He has spent over $60,000 a month for blood testing, at times, and had Dexa Scans once a day for weeks to identify if his fasting was burning too much muscle from his body.
I loved the idea of engineering a work from home assignment so I could work from anywhere. I had always wanted to do that, but as an R&D scientist, I was totally tied to the lab and manufacturing facility. After reading Tim's book, I found a new job that I enjoyed more and was no longer tied to a lab or factory.
Biggest Biohack I learned from Tim
Following Tim's advice, I found a way to engineer my own work from home assignment! I've been working from home for 8 years now and couldn't be happier. My commute is zero minutes. I spend my free time with my kids, reading, researching, writing and getting outside. I can work outside on my back porch without my shirt on on the summer. I have less anxiety and get more done than I ever could working in an office. Thanks Tim!
Dave Asprey - Probably the best known biohacker and one of the main people to make biohacking and Bulletproof Coffee (of course)mainstream. Dave's Bulletproof Executive podcast is by far THE best podcast for free information on biohacking and health.
Dave is the person who most drew me into the world of biohacking. Right when I was looking for something more, a way to deep dive into the field, he opened up the First Ever Bulletproof Coaching program. I signed up, and the rest if history.
Biggest Biohack I learned from Dave
I learned about ketosis from Dave. Ketosis is running our body off fat for energy instead of glucose (sugar). When we minimize carbs to below 50 grams per dayour bodies need a source other than glucose for fuel. Glucose is what the body typically uses for fuel because most of us eat so many carbohydrates every day, and those carbohydrates turn into glucose in our bodies, that we never run out of sugar. If we ever do run out of sugar for fuel, we feel shakey, irritable, angry and low energy. We NEED to eat! Well, if we instead train our bodies to run off fat, we will convert that fat into ketones in the body. Ketones will be used as energy in our body and brain. We all, even those of us skinny people with 5% bodyfat, have plenty of bodyfat to use for energy for many months. Supposedly our brains run better and cleaner off ketones. Dave advocates for cyclical ketosis, which is eating some carbs, but saving them all for the last meal of the day. This way our bodies can be in ketosis most of the day and then we come out of ketosis at dinner when we eat carbs. This cyclical ketosis supposedly gives us the benefits of ketones and glucose.
Ben Greenfield- Ben is the most fun of all the biohackers. He's so entertaining to listen to (podcast here) and watch (check out his snapchat). He's an athlete and a biohacker and isn't afraid to try some experiments that would make most of us cringe. Some of his podcasts and blog posts are pretty controversial but he really delves deep in to the science behind all of them. He really knows his shit when it comes to health and nutrition. His podcast is one of my favorites and I KNOW that he is really passionate about helping people perform at their best whether they are athletes or not.
Biggest Biohack I learned from Ben
Me and Ben at Paleo f(x)
SO many biohacks I use are from Ben. I actually model my day based on his morning and evening routines. The ONE biohack I'm experimenting with right now that's new for me is Beta Lapachone Tea. Beta Lapachones have been shown have highly anti-cancer acitivty. I use Pau d'Arco tea (comes in a ground powder) that I add into the blender with sunflower lecithin to make the beta lapachone more bioavailable. I try to use this a few times a week. It's cheap and easy to make. I blender it up and then add some berries, protein powder, vegetable powder and soaked nuts. BAM! One of the healthiest smoothies ever.
DR JACK KRUSE
Dr Jack Kruse - Jack goes deep. Jack is probably the most controversial biohacker and extremely opinionated. He is a practicing neurosurgeon and believes light, water, and magnetism are the 3 most important factors in human health. He thinks using natural spring water and religiously using light appropriately are more important than food or anything else you could do for your health. As I dig into his work and ideas, it seems he's onto something. He advocates for stopping our exposure to artificial and processed light which can massively harm our health. He believes exposure to LED and CFL lights will be the next health danger of our generation.
Biggest Biohack I learned from Jack
I have begun getting as much full spectrum natural sunlight as possible in the morning without glasses or sunglasses and avoiding or protecting myself from artificial lights after dark.
Dr Mercola - Probably the most prolific writer and publisher of health information on the web. I have followed Mercola for over 12 years. Dr Mercola is an Osteopathic physician and used to have his own practice in Chicago. He started writing about health and wellness on the web and transitioned to that work full time and then moved down to Florida in the last few years. He is now retired and lets his sister and others create much of the content for his site. He still does podcasts though.
Biohacking tips that changed my life - I learned the importance of avoiding grains from Dr Mercola. Avoiding grains until you get your health under control can be a huge game changer for many people, me included. Once you have done this long enough, years usually, and have fixed many of your problems, you can begin adding grains back into your diet (assuming the grains are soaked, sprouted or fermented)
Daniel may not think of himself as a biohacker, but he’s been one of the biggest recent influencers on my life. He’s a Re-wilder. This means, he works to overcome our human domestication and gets back to our wild roots. Like the sweater wearing poodle that was once a grey wolf, we humans are a fragile and lonely afterimage of our wild ancestors. Daniel isn’t afraid to approach taboo topics and his podcasts are so good I’ve listened to every single one of them. He continues to inspire me.
Biohacking tips that changed my life – Spring water, fresh from the ground is the ideal drinking water source. If you don’t think you have a natural spring close to your house, think again. http://www.findaspring.com will help you identify a spring near you. Grab a glass carboy and fill up on water free of fluoride, chlorine and pharmaceuticals. The water near me is actually in the heart of the city. It’s pumped from 1 mile underground in an aquafer that hasn’t been touched in thousands of years. It’s not exactly a natural spring bubbling up from the ground, but it’s untreated water fresh from mother earth.
